Arguably the rarest of the XT line the 550 was only built for the '82-'83 model years.Another project never started. Planned to have new rubber fitted, a set of mirrors, and the bike registered. I failed, I feel bad.Purchased this old classic on first sight as she was mostly complete, not abused or molested with a stupid low 2481 kms on the clock!Very little surface rust, and aluminium that has escaped the usual corrosion of a bike carelessly stored.Dent in the left side of the tank. Some cracking in the rear mud guard.Nice forks and wheels. Suspension, although likely due a service, is lacking the slop and slump of a high miler.Have never seen another with original exhaust and guards. Except in brochures.
A good tin man should be able to straighten the rear exhaust guard out for beer money.Seat is perfect and as seen still has the original strap.Fork sliders rust free.No rust visible in the tank.Sump guard removed but included with (original hardware) to locate oil weep. Found - loose sump plug. Possibly missing crush washer. Readily available at Yamaha. New owner to resolve.Sprockets and chain have plenty of life in them.
Look to be original as the retaining washers have not been touched.Garaged and covered during my custodianship.Running when purchased but not started for 2 or 3 years. Electrics were all working at that time.Still has the VIC rego label from 2012.Given the patina and low mileage this would seem to be the perfect old skool survivor.
